Video: Officers save life of choking girl

By EMS1 Staff

LAREDO, Texas — Dash cam footage released Friday shows two Texas officers save the life of a choking girl.

Officers Alberto Tijerina and Gerardo Dimas were leaving a traffic accident investigation when they saw a Suburban pull over. A mother holding her daughter, who was reportedly turning purple, frantically approached the officers.

After several attempts, the officers successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver and the girl's airway was cleared, according to Pro 8 News. She was able to drink water and swallow the candy that caused her to choke.

"The mother was hysterical and panicked and it's understandable. Her reaction was to drive to the hospital. The two hospitals are quite far. Thank God we were there to help the child," said Dimas.

Dimas and Tijerina told Pro 8 News that they can't imagine what would have happened had five more minutes gone by.

"Only God knows that," said Tijerina.

The girl and her mother have told police they are extremely grateful for what the officers did.
