AHA Guidelines 2010: Implications for EMS

This narrative addresses how the American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines 2010 (G2010) affect healthcare providers in the prehospital environment. Kenny Navarro, Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, offers his interpretation of the implications of G2010 related to both basic and advanced cardiac life support changes. The article also summarizes the AHA Classes of Recommendation, which were updated in 2010.

 36-year old mother of two survives cardiac arrest

Two days before her birthday, Dawn Blake woke up with an uncomfortable back pain and had trouble falling back asleep. She went downstairs to lie on the couch. About 20 minutes later, her husband, Mike, heard a noise and came downstairs to investigate. He approached her to ask about the noise and found her unresponsive. Dawn had gone into cardiac arrest.
