3 killed, 3 injured in fire at Iowa trailer home

The Associated Press

ARLINGTON, Iowa — Three people, including two small children, died in a Saturday morning fire that consumed their northeast Iowa trailer home, authorities said.

Three other people — two adults and one child — were injured in the blaze three miles southwest of Arlington and at least two were taken to a hospital in Oelwein for treatment, the Fayette County sheriff's office said. Details of their injuries were not released. The hospital's emergency room had no information Saturday on their conditions.

Don Handel, the mayor in Arlington and a member of its fire department, told the Des Moines Register that one of the victims was flown to an Iowa City hospital.

Authorities haven't released the names, ages or genders of the dead or injured. All six victims lived in the trailer home.

The fire was reported about 4 a.m. Saturday. The sheriff's office said the home was engulfed in flames when firefighters from four departments arrived. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

A message left Saturday for the Iowa state fire marshal, whose office was helping with the investigation, was not immediately returned.

A dispatcher in the sheriff's office said no additional information was expected Saturday.

Handel said there were several trailer homes on the rural property and the victims were in two adjacent trailers connected by a covered walkway. An occupant in another nearby trailer called for help, he said.
