Firefighter giving first aid hurt when truck busts through garage door

Fort Worth Star-Telegram

FORT WORTH, Texas — Firefighters giving first aid to a woman in a far south Fort Worth driveway Tuesday afternoon had to dive for safety when a truck crashed through a closed garage door, authorities reported.

Police chased the truck for about five miles, stopping it by spiking the tires, said Officer Daniel Segura, a police spokesman.

One firefighter was slightly hurt, said Battalion Chief Richard Harrison, a fire department spokesman.

According to an early police report, the incident began about 3:30 p.m. with a 911 call from a residence in the 1100 block of Trinidad Drive. The caller was a 10-year-old girl who said her parents were hitting each other.

She said she was outside the house with her 7-year-old brother, according to the report.

Police and firefighters who responded found an injured woman in the driveway, but the man was nowhere in sight, Harrison said.

The woman told the firefighters that the man “may have doused the house with gasoline,” Harrison said.

Firefighters thought it best to move back, but that’s when the truck crashed through the garage door, Harrison said.

“He just blew through the door,” Harrison said.

The firefighters grabbed the woman and jumped away from the vehicle and the garage door, which had been torn loose.

“They were just able to get out of the way,” he said. “And, when I say just, it was a very close thing.

“They had to take her and do it in a fast manner.”

Officers chased the truck about five miles north to Glasgow Road near its intersection with Cloverdale Drive, Segura said.

The man was arrested after the vehicle stopped, Segura said. His name and the charges he faces were no available Tuesday evening.

The injured firefighter was taken to Texas Health Huguley Hospital in south Fort Worth, but he was expected to be treated and released, Harrison said.
