SAN JOSE, Calif. — Five people were injured in a crash outside a South San Jose shopping center Wednesday afternoon, including a girl who was thrown from a minivan, Fire Department officials said.

San Jose fire Capt. Rob Brown said all five people were rushed to the hospital with moderate injuries and were expected to survive.

The accident between a minivan and a small SUV occurred outside the Blossom Hill Square Shopping Center at Blossom Hill and Harwood roads, close to the Los Gatos border, at 3:30 p.m. One girl was thrown from the minivan in the crash, while another minor and two adults in the van were injured along with the driver of the SUV, who was alone in the vehicle.

About 25 firefighters and four ambulances responded because so many people were injured, officials said. Crews used extrication tools to remove some of the occupants from the vehicles, Brown said.

He said it was not immediately clear what caused the crash. San Jose police are investigating.
